The Weight Of The World.

In the Music World today, there is a lack of young talent from the British side of things. Whatever talent there is, goes unoticed and untouched. This was until a few bands came along and changed my opinion of this. Deaf Havana, Young Guns and Francesqa showed me a new insight to Young British bands and boy, are they here to stay.

Young Guns are a 5 piece rock band. They hail from High Wycombe and my god are they amazing. Their first EP Mirrors was released on the 22nd of June 2009 and saw little in the way of acknowledgement from the music world. Even though the track "Weight Of The World" was on this which is at the minute their leading single. Young Guns toured this EP and debuted new tracks in the last months of 2009 then went onto work on their 2010 masterpiece "All Our Kings Are Dead" which we will get onto in a second.

In July 22nd almost a year after the EP release Young Guns released their first full length album "All Our Kings Our Dead". The album went in at number 43 in the album charts and number 3 in the rock charts. An impressive feat for a band with no prior experience. The album spawned 3 main singles. Them being "Son's of Apathy", "Crystal Clear" and "Weight Of The World". Now once they had re released Weight Of The World it became a lot more popular with the public. Each track landed within the top 20 boosting Young Guns profile and landing them sell out tour dates with the band I mentioned Deaf Havana.

The band went onto tour with the likes of Bon Jovi and Lostprophets which increased their popularity with British, European and American fans all alike. The way they communicate with fans via shows is outstanding. The lead singer Gus constantly adresses the audience and makes them feel part of the band and part of something special. This can be seen by how the band took to Reading Festival Mainstage in under a year of making their first EP. A band with such talent deserves to be even mre recognised then they are.

If you my very few viewer's go out and buy All Our Kings Are Dead you will not be;
Happy
Sad
Angry at a waste of money
You will all be mystified as to how a band that is this good has not hit it big yet and how such a good talent from our own country is not more famous and acclaimed. But be the judge for yourself and listen to this quite frankly, astonishing album.

Young Guns say that "Devotion Should Be Owed Not Earned, Only You Determine What Your Worth". If this is the case Young Guns devotion to what they do and what they perform is unmatched. This band have determined their worth and its right up there with the best of them.

She Saw My Combover..

Kings. Of. Leon.

Where to start with this band? My favourite band. Caleb, Nathan, Jared and Matthew started the band back in 1999. This is where they dawned the long hair and beards that made Kings Of Leon Kings Of Leon. The band started in the Basement of Caleb who had roped the help of brothers Nathan and Jared and called his cousin Matthew to help and play lead. The band wrote their first four songs in the basement of Caleb. According to refference they used a lot of weed to do this and from this their first four songs were made which consisted of "Wicker Chair", "Holly Roller Novacaine" "Mollys Chambers" and "California Waiting". These four songs made a lasting impact on an agent from a music label.

Youth and Young Manhood hit the UK in July 2003. It recieved positive reviews from all the magazine's and music journalists. NME called it one of the best debut albums from the past 10 years, While Rolling Stones magazine gave it a good 9/10. Youth and Young Manhoods lead single "Molly's Chambers" is nothing short of rock perfection. From the instantly recogniseable vocals to the hard hitting rhythem guitar nothing could fault this song. The album was so popular along with the single that Kings Of Leon went on to tour with The Strokes and U2. Not bad for a band in their first year is it guys? But even with the huge popularity of Kings Of Leon in the UK they had still not taken off in the USA. But surley stardom would come with the second album? Or would it..?

The band's second release "Aha Shake Heartbreak" is no short of exquisite. Spawning such singles as "Four Kicks" (Pictured above). Four kicks is a true rock song. No questions asked. The way the guitar hits you is like a stone to the face. The vocals again instantly recogniseable from his high pitched scream attempts. The simple yet catching drum beat and the bass keeps on churning that same driving rhythem is almost hypnotic. The whole album is amazing. From the soft acoustics of "Milk" to the upbeat ness of "King Of The Rodeo". This album defines what Kings Of Leon is about. No pre produced dribble just hard, raw rock. Rock at its finest is hard to beat and this is the still true for Kings Of Leon as it is hard to beat such a defining album. Songs such as "The Bucket" and "Taper Jean Girl" broke into the UK top 40 (The Bucket reaching number 9) proing that England still loved Kings Of Leon after this album. But popularity and success had still eluded them in America, Third time lucky?

Curtains up its time for Because Of The Times. The album was released in July 2007 with the lead single of "On Call" being released beforehand selling 70,000 copies in its first week. Love them or lothe them Kings Of Leon know how to make a dam good record. This record featured a lot more songs based around acoustics rather then rock. Now im open for change and for most of the record it worked with songs like "Fans" being a regular in the setlist when they played live. However reviews were not so kind as me. Kings Of Leon recieved mix recognition to this album saying that "The formula had been changed to much" that they were "Getting lost". Now from my opinion a band has to change and that Kings Of Leon did and to my favour. I love this album with a passion as I try to scream Charmer to anyone that is around me. Whilst the later tracks lack in being out there the album is still good but hey this is not my Kings Of Leon story its what they've done. So 50/50 on this album guys, but still! America NO LIKEY KINGS OF LEON! But what happened next was about to change Kings Of Leon forever..

In September 2008, Kings Of Leon released Only By The Night. Their fourth studio album. The world went from who are Kings Of Leon? To. OH MY GOD ITS KINGS OF LEON. The album went straight in at album charts at number one producing a lengthy stint. The first single of the album was called "Sex On Fire". This to me is the song that killed Kings Of Leon. Kings Of Leon to me and many others sold out on this album. They ditched their southern style of rock for a more poppy sound. A sound that would sell records and their career became less about the music and more about the money. I felt let down by the album athough it had some great tracks. Tracks such as "Be Somebody" and "Closer" got no recognition when THE Kings Of Leon track came out that won the world over for sure. "Use Somebody" was released and it went through the roof. Everywhere you went you couldn't escape it. It was on music channels, the radio, and on Chav's phones everywhere you went. This is not Kings Of Leon! Their music deserves to be played for its raw agressiveness like "Black Thumbnail" and "Four Kicks". Admitingly, I like this song but I know its not the best Kings Of Leon track out there. I know they have produced more then one album and they deserve recognition for the genius of the first three albums.

Kings Of Leon went on to headline numerous English festivals such as Reading and Glastonbury. I was in the crowd for Reading and when playing an older song off an album I heard someone say "Is this a new one?". Its things like this that show me Kings Of Leon have sold themselves out. They then went on to rant about how the crowd didnt like them and didnt sing along. But to be fair why should they when your new audience only knows two songs? I still love them but it was a pretty low point of their career.

They are now currently touring their new album Come Around Sundown and are down to play a lot of festivals across the summer. I like the new album it sounds like the old ones.. Enough said.

Kings Of Leon have so much depth and passion to their music yet they didn't stick to it when they mattered, so they didnt conquer America with their albums? Everywhere else loves you but you still needed to make that much more money that you had to do that. I still love Kings Of Leon and always will. If they could just rekindle that old spirit of music that made them so ambitious and so out there.. I could fall in love all over again.

Kings Of Leon say that they are on call to be there, I hope they'll be on call for a long time and continue to amaze me with their music (Be it good or bad)

2011.. At A Glance.

Well 2011 does hold some suprises! Where to begin? The Welsh legends Funeral For A Friend's new album, or the return album of Blink 182?

For this article I will say, Funeral For A Friend excite me the most at the minute.

After listening to their back catolouge on the way to De Montfort Uni today I fell in love with them all over again. Not a single bad track on "Your History Is Mine". But one track caught and hooked me especially. "Captains Of Industry". This song is scary at times, because of how good all the melodies work together. I dont think I have heard a better guitar sound from a band then I have in the chorus of this song. The way the vocalists pitch hits just above the guitar is quite frankly outstanding.

The smile on Mat Davies face describes everything about Funeral For A Friend. This band have been going for ten year's and still make outstanding music. On everyone of their albums there has been a standout track which has taken FFAF's career to new hights. Wether it be Juneau, Roses For The Dead, Into Oblivion or Waterfront Dance Club to mention a few. You just cant tire of listening to this band. The superb guitar licks keep you hooked and wanting more. Matt's impressive lyrics and strong vocal's shock to the core.

Funeral For A Friend have already cemented their name in music history as one of the driving forces of early Milenium Rock. I personally didn't start listening til around Casualy Dressed but I can see what I have missed. Their new album "Welcome Home Armageddon" is sure to be a return to their routes and is essentialy going to boost them to even greater hights. With Festival dates booked. A spring tour planned. Its going to be a good year for FFAF.

They sing "I'll stand into Oblivion". And I will stand into Oblivion when Welcome Home Armageddon comes out. And rock out listening to it as it happens.

David's Blog Proudly Presents... The Wombats.

RIGHT

Blog is back on the go!

So to kick it off, I thought i'd go ahead with The Wombats. Now the Wombats first album was something of a hit and miss from my point of view and to be honest. I loved the songs that were popular and lively like most of Kings Of Leon's fans at the minute. However their newly released songs "Tokyo" and "Jump Into The Fog" are something different. Led by Bass and Synth instead of Guitar and Bass. Tokyo is catchy and upbeat. Jump Into The Fog takes a new turn on Wombats with deep and emotionally hitting lyrics. ..This Modern Glitch (The new album) seem's to have a lot more depth to it then their previous release. For me this is a good thing as it can show the bands down to earth and more human side then just a band.

Something that hits me when listening to Tokyo is how The Wombats have evolved lyrically and musically. Their lyrics of "Im sick of dancing with the beast" is their way of saying that the music industry is slowly wearing them down and they are sick of doing it. (Or at least this is one interpretation). The song features lyrics on how the band wish they were back in a bar. Where things were more simple and they could be left to themselves. This to me shows how they have evolved into a band with more depth then talking about losing girls at the local disco. The video also plays a heavy part in the song. The video shows the band arriving at Tokyo only to go and do their own thing whilst being chased by their manager. The video features numerous references as to what can happen on the road (Alcohol addictions, drug addictions and cheap sex) As seen below.I personally see this band as one to watch for 2011. A new album, A new tour, New festival dates and a new direction for The Wombats.

Wombats song say's that they are sick of dancing with the beat, however if they keep making songs like Tokyo and Jump Into The Fog. They are going to cement themselves in music history as one of the leading British Underdogs in the current industry.
